School Committee Extends Haas Contract Through 2029

Maynard School Committee extends Superintendent Brian Haas's contract through 2029 after an hour of public testimony over a challenged library book. The board voted 5-0 to approve a 5 percent salary increase and a $1,234 merit-based special project payment tied to the Green Meadow Elementary building project, then voted 5-0 again to extend Haas's term from July 2023 through June 30, 2029. More than a dozen speakers, including social worker Taylor Reimers and bookstore owner Elizabeth Thoese, urged the committee to keep the memoir "Gender Queer" in the Maynard High School library after a parent complaint; no vote was taken on the book.
The meeting also marked the final session for Chair Natasha Rivera and Director of Finance Wayne, who is retiring after six years. "I've learned a lot from each of you," Rivera told colleagues. The committee also accepted warrants 26-073 through 26-079.
