Maynard Schools Seek $612,000 Override to Preserve 11 Staff Positions

MAYNARD — April 30, 2025 — Maynard school officials are asking voters to approve a $612,000 operational override to avoid cutting 11 staff positions in FY2026. Superintendent Brian Haas and School Committee Chair Natasha Champagne presented the updated budget at an April 30 public forum, noting the district had already trimmed its ask from roughly $1.2 million by drawing on revolving accounts and anticipated retirements. The town's proposed allocation of $23,751,000 leaves an $843,000 gap against the district's $24,594,000 request; the override would cover $612,000 of that shortfall while the district absorbs the remaining $231,000 through two and a half position reductions. The state DLS calculator puts the residential tax impact at approximately $147 annually per household. Failure to pass the override would trigger layoffs equal to 4 percent of staff and potential increases to busing, athletic, and activity fees. The School Committee is expected to vote on the budget at its next regular meeting, with a community Q&A session also scheduled at the Maynard Public Library's Roosevelt Room on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
