Maynard School Committee Seeks $612,000 Override After Last-Minute Budget Shift

MAYNARD — April 16, 2025 — Maynard School Committee revised its FY26 override request down to $612,000, from $1.1 million, after the Select Board added roughly $263,000 to the town's school allocation the night before the April 16 public hearing. Superintendent Brian Hos presented two budget scenarios: $24,504,839 if the override passes, preserving most programs and limiting cuts to four positions including the unfilled athletic trainer slot, or $24,047,839 without the override, triggering 11 total position reductions and a roughly $295,000 draw on reserve funds. The $612,000 figure also covers a tentatively negotiated new paraprofessional contract that Hos called dependent on the override passing. The committee plans community forums April 30 and May 3 ahead of a special town election scheduled for May 27, and will take a formal budget vote at its first meeting after April vacation. The added allocation came from health insurance renegotiations that cut a projected increase from nearly 10 percent to approximately 3 percent — savings the Select Board directed to the schools.
