MAYNARD — The Maynard School Committee heard a recommendation to keep the graphic memoir "Gender Queer" on Maynard High School library shelves, with a public hearing set for roughly two weeks out. A review committee led by a staff member identified as Deanna found the book met neither of the state Freedom to Read Act's two removal standards: it is not age-inappropriate for all students served by the school, and it is not devoid of educational or social value. Librarian Jean told the committee "it sort of diminishes the whole idea of freedom to read" to let individual parents block their own child's access through the library system.
A resident named Gina objected during public comment to a single graphic image, saying "I don't care if an adult buys this, but my 12-year-old daughter should not go to this library and see this book." Separately, the district reported spending $29.37 million in allowable net school spending against a required $19.59 million floor, with about $19 million reflecting MSBA reimbursements tied to the Green Meadow building project. The committee approved minutes and accepted three warrants without objection.
