Maynard Finance Committee Eyes Operational Override as FY26 Budget Gaps Mount

MAYNARD — January 27, 2025 — Maynard Finance Committee signals likely Proposition 2.5 override push as FY26 budget gaps emerge. Chair Jillian Prendergast opened the Jan. 27 remote meeting by describing the proposed general fund budget as hitting "a wall," noting that the town administrator's recommended spending plan eliminates the $50,000 capital budget line, removes trash and recycling from the general fund, and decreases the reserve account for the first time in recent memory. School Committee representative Natasha told the committee the schools are $1.4 million short of what the town administrator recommended and that the School Committee intends to pursue a formal operational override for at least that amount, driven largely by contractual salary costs. Committee member Peter Campbell flagged that fire department salaries are proposed to rise nearly 12 percent — roughly $270,000 — while police salaries increased only about 2.89 percent, and pressed for line-by-line budget detail. Healthcare benefits, representing approximately $10 million of the town's roughly $50 million budget, are now projected to increase between 9.92 percent and as much as 19.92 percent, well above the 8 percent the town administrator assumed. The committee voted 6-0 to approve its January 13 minutes and scheduled a February 10 meeting at which Maynard Schools will present its full FY26 budget request and a pending HVAC reserve fund transfer.
